BHRT For Women

Three types of hormones typically prescribed for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) are estrogen, progesterone, and androgens. After a physical exam, medical history and laboratory testing, a customized combination and form of bioidentical hormones will be recommended. Hormone levels are carefully monitored to ensure that appropriate dosage adjustments are made.

Bioidentical vs. Synthetic Estrogens

Synthetic or non-bioidentical conjugated equine estrogens (CEE), derived from the urine of pregnant mares, is molecularly different than human hormones and can create damage to human hormone receptors resulting in negative side effects. Long-term use of CEE has been shown to increase risk of breast cancer, particularly when synthetic progestin medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) is added. In addition, synthetic non-bioidentical hormones may contribute to early elevated levels of C-reactive protein, one of the main indicators of cardiovascular events.
